Application of the friction welding in construction. Analytic note.
Process of friction welding is acceptable to apply in construction and production of reinforcing bars and casing work-pieces. Application of the given process is regulated by the following international standards:
ISO 17660-1:2006 Welding — Welding of reinforcing steel — Part 1: Load-bearing welded joints

Friction welding of high-speed and construction steels
End cutting tool (drill bits, end mills, taps, reamers etc.) is practicable to make from heterogeneous steels. Cutting (working) part is made of high-speed steel, which is more wear-resistant, firm, red-resistant and therefore costly. On the other hand, construction steels are used for production of tale part of the instrument. That gives more viscosity for this part and reduces cost of the instrument significantly. Read more
Friction weldability of various metals and alloys
According to some researchers gripe is possible between any metals in principle. On this basis one would assume that the friction welding of any given pair of metals is principally possible given that the necessary conditions are created and right welding mode is selected. The majority of studied and the most commonly used on practice combinations of metals and alloys are successfully welded with friction indeed. Among these metals there are those that are difficultly or impossibly connecting by an alternative type of welding (aluminum to steel, copper to steel, austenitic stainless steel with pearlite and other combinations). Areas of application of the friction welding
Practically defined that friction welding is advisable to apply in the following cases:
- instead of electric-arc and other means of fusion welding;
- Instead of resistance welding;
- instead of soldering and riveting;
- instead of detachable joints details;
- with the manufacture of parts of complex forgings by their separation into simpler blank followed by welding;
- when joining details with final machine-treated surfaces;
- when creating new designs of rational parts that optimally meet the operating conditions;
- for repairing details and tools.
Absence of welding spatter and high accuracy compound allows to apply this friction for welding parts that have passed final machining, including grinding and polishing. Anti-corrosion and strengthening coverings on parts is not an obstacle for welding, because the resulting relatively small heat-affected zone near the junction saves coverage. The same feature of the process makes it possible to weld hardened parts. Friction welding is advisable to apply for restoration of hardened parts, especially metal-cutting end tools. This may be used as for a second-hand parts of items, and newly manufactured parts. When calculating the tool costs using friction welding is generally less than 50% as compared with other methods of recovery also the quality is considerably higher. Read more
Technological specificities of friction welding process
Economic expediency of the friction welding process is due to high effectiveness of the process and low cost energy. The ability to connect different materials, including hard-welding heterogeneous alloys, increased level of adaptability to the manufacture of products and good adaptability to the creation of high-performance computer-aided manufacturing are also significant benefits.
